Best software for determining which computer a user is logged into?

You say you're the network manager, what role is your boss in? Sounds like you have some sort of managed or at least semi managed system provided by the ICT company you mention? Is it RM?

Spiceworks is free and can do a lot of things from a call logging system to inventory and it can even tell you how much warranty you have left on a computer if the manufacturer allows (works with HP) it displays everything from a computers serial number to a full list of what's installed on each computer.

Like I say though it needs time investing in it to set it up properly but its a fantastic tool especially the reports.

Agreed, its a great tool for an IT Establishment and there is also a large community on Spiceworks if you are ever stuck.

Sorry for the delay in replying. :) My ex-boss was the ICT manager. I've now taken over that role following his departure in August. My line manager is now the headteacher.

We don't have a managed network like RM. My previous job was in a school signed up to RM. Never again! I honestly think my ex-boss wasn't quite telling the truth with what we are allowed to do here. Our school uses a small local business that supports a fair number of schools in the area.

Ah, makes more sense now. Sounds like you're on the right track anyway :)

Similar situation for us, the school was with RM until about 4 years ago when we went vanilla, and now have a (fairly) local business that support us with new projects and emergencies.
