Hi, What would you say was the best program for converting my dvd's to xvid/divx on my athlon x2 rig, Preferably being able to use both cpu's?

Thanks

Nero's Recode 2 is also very good with easy options for Multiple audio streams (yay we can keep the directors commentry) subtitles, full DVD res mp4's.

It's been a while since I encoded any DVDs to divx - how long does it take on say a Core2Duo? I seem to remember it takes about 3-4 hours on my XP1900 rig.

And the other way? How long to convert a divx to DVD? This is more important. At the momoent it takes too long to be worthwhile, but it would be very handy.

autoGK for DVD -> xvid

winAvi for xvid -> DVD

no idea how long a DVD rip would take, but for reference by dothan 740 will convert xvid to dvd at 50-60fps. I'd expect a conroe to near double that.

Quoting frames per second without specifying the encoder settings is a waste of time... as an example, I code at around 20fps in extreme quality (DivX) but if I set the encoder to insane the rate drops to 12fps....

It all depends on coder setting, cpu speed, filters used and the resolution of the output file.

Xvid does also. I use AutoGk a lot for converting mpegs to avi/xvid specificaly recordings from dvbt. 350meg files with minimum 640x width resolution and 192vbr mp3. source files are usualy 40-45 mins and it takes approximatly 30-35 mins to encode (2 passes).

Nerovision is good/fast for getting avis into dvd format. Winavi is very fast but its quality leaves a lot to be desired even in best quality mode.

I've had problems with encoding, it seems to change aspect ratio and downsize the resolution, I want OAQ and original resolution, to compare original DVD and compressed 1.4GB movies.

Vbr should always be used tbh, far better quality.

I just virtual dub for dvd->x.264

I dunno if vbr 192 is worth it though. Some channels will transmit in 192k anyway, recoding this is has a negative affect. Most of the channels are 256k I think, so obviously the filesize is slightly reduced, however I just use abr 128 for tv rips.

O.k. im running autoGK on a movie that is 1hour 51mins long on my X2 4400+, How long should it take?

Also it doesnt seem to give you the option to change the setting in divx or xvid, Does it set them itself?

Hi MadMatty,
Quick question is your dvbt source 350Mb?
Just trying to get a handle on the amount of compression...
Cheers
Oh and why do *you* use vbr?

the DVBT source varies in size. usualy an hours recording is anything from 800 megs to 1.2 gigs depending on the channel. the tv card software simply saves whats in the broadcast stream to mpeg so no reencoding my end for the recording. the source is usualy 720x568 192cbr mp2.

I reencode to vbr simply because it keeps(or should keep)same quality with file size benefit.

AutoGK will usualy come up with something around 70% quality when told to reencode to 350meg xvid, but in some cases as much as 95% quality and retain 720x res especially on channels which transmit at low bitrates to start with.

Something to note is that BBC channels seem to alocate themselvs the highest bitrate for their transmission, yet still suffer from a lot of macro blocks, more so then any other channel that use much lower bitrates. bbc just waisting bandwidth if you ask me ;)

I havent encoded a film recently, but id say 40 mins per pass? only way to know for sure is to try it.

there are not many settings hence why its called AUTOgk, it finds the best settings for you, but you do get some control. you can choose a set quality maximum or a filesize to aim for and also what quality you want your audio and what resolution you want to aim for. ctrl f9 will bring up some advanced options where you can force aspect ratio and crop if need be.

Depends on what codec it uses and what settings the codec is using, also the resolution.
