Getting more and more frequent when playing a game I'll think to myself damn I wish I would have recorded that , even when spectating mates etc for the funny moments.

So I'm thinking of starting to record videos when in game and try my hand at editing etc and uploading to YouTube if there any good :D

Question is what's the best software for this ? I know nvidia have an option but I never bother installing gameworks, just the display drivers :) ... what's everyone else using ?

As you have a 1080, Nvidia Shadowplay

It's great and has little to no impact on system performance.

I don't know about Shadowplay but since you have a 1080 you may as well give it a go. Also try-out OBS, here is decent guide to get it setup and running (he runs the largest Age of Empires 2 channel but you can apply what he says to any game):

I've used FRAPS in the past but I have to say that OBS Studio is fantastic and works with both Nvidia and AMD GPUs. It has a shad load of features for recording your game play in any level of quality you want and can also do things like record web cam footage of you while you are playing if that is your cup of tea. Plus best of all OBS Studio is 100% free.

One thing to bear in mind is that you should be using OBS Studio rather than OBS Classic as OBS Classic has now been abandoned and won't receive any future updates. OBS Studio has more features than OBS Classic anyway so you really want to be using it.

I found dxtory pretty good, performance-wise and it has a lot more flexibility compared to FRAPS (which hasn't been updated in over 3 years!)

What's shadowplay like for editing etc ? And also how much of an impact will I see to performance ? Meant to put that in the op :)

It's the best I've used in terms of performance, but I don't think it has much, if anything, in the way of editing features. If it has, then I've completely missed that! :D

OBS gets a lot of healthy praise, so consider that as well.

OBS is brilliant. I've given up on raptr to use the DVR feature in OBS instead. Perfect for recording funny moments as you're not creating a huge video without need just saving the past x amount of seconds.

Must admit I am getting tempted to buy a nvidia just for shadow play now.

Very minimal features, you'd be better off putting the recordings into proper editing software i.e Vegas.

Cant you use OBS with shadowplay as well? :)

Stelly

OBS Studio supports Nvidia hardware encoding so it works the same as Shadowplay except is has loads of extra features that Shadowplay doesn't have. So you are always going to be better off using OBS Studio compared to Shadowplay.

Out of interest, what is everyone's favourite software for editing? I'm looking for something relatively easy to pick up for my 9 year-old daughter. She's been using Windows Movie Maker but has some frustrating automated (ahem) features and she wants more direct control.
