Hey everyone,

A friend of mine's birthday is coming up on the radar soon and he's seriously into pinning pictures of memories onto his walls and generally personalising his room, so considering I've been dabbling in amateur photography recently I was planning on making a shot or two of mine into a poster as a present.

However, although I get the impression there are a great deal places out there that do this now, I'm unsure as to who to go for.

I'm primarily after quality of print and don't require any fancy extras such as frames etc. Ideally I'd not want to pay the earth, but at the end of the day the print will probably see a long reign so quality is still paramount.

I see Cafe Press do 23" x 35" size ones, which sound a suitable size, however I'm doubtful as to wether they're the best source considering the huge range of other things they do and the generally very comercial approach they have to custom products. That said, they are a reasonable price.

Basically, I'd appreciate it if anyone who's had similar prints made could share their experiences and wield your knowledge to make a few recomendations.

Also, anyone have any rules of thumb about what resolution is minimum for this kind of work? I use a Canon 400D, so my shots (providing they're uncropped) are 10.1MP. Comparing the longest side, that works out at 111dpi - should I be looking at smaller prints?

Thanks! :)
Peter

Hi,

I've used Photobox before for poster prints. Mine were slightly smaller prints than the ones you're looking at but came from significantly smaller images (taken with an old Ixus before I got my 400D). They came out very well and the resolution certainly wasn't an issue.

The only other recommendation I can offer is for canvas prints. It doesn't appear that you're after canvas but if you are, I've got a couple of sellers bookmarked from recommendations that have appeared on these forums in the past, let me know if you want them.

I would highly recommend Photobox as well. I got 6 poster sized prints (Not sure on size, but I think they are A2 sized paper) off them a while back and they were all fantastic. Like you, all taken on a 400D.

I now have 2 of them on the walls in my house :)
