Best Speed camera detector?

Think these things are legal to use now (except for the jammers) so which ones do people reccomend, and do they actually help in avoiding fines. Sorry, avoiding blackspots

What kind of warning time do you get?

Road angel compact is probably the best value but will shortly become illegal due to the built in, non-removal laser detector. Road Angel 2 has the same functionality but the laser detector is removable so it will remain legal when they ban all "active" detection methods.

Warning time is user selectable. You can set it to warn you 10, 20, 30 seconds before the camera etc.

Origin B2 has the removable laser. Costs almost 400 quid new though, can be had on ebay for around £200.

I've got one but i'm too lazy to install it!

You got it the wrong way round Rilot the compact has no built in laser detector it is seperate and needs to be bought as such. The RA2 has front and rear laser detection built in but if it does get banned then Blackspot have said they will release a new firmware for the unit so it can be permanently disabled if the user wants to comply with the law.

I have a RA2 and am very happy with it but if i was buying again I would buy the compact and the seperate laser detector add on. It is cheaper that way than the RA2 which has them built in. Also the compact will notify you of the road speed limits were this function hasnt been added to the RA2 yet, although their support told me they are in the process of doing this.

In terms of non radar detection, I cannot think of a single way in which a dedicated GOS based speed camera detector is better than a TomTom equipped PDA or standalone unit with the PocketGPS database.

would these work on the new cameras on the motor ways? the ones that tower hiiiiigh above you and watch you for a mile.

I have both with the pocket GPS camera database on my PDA. The database just doesnt keep up with new cameras being fitted quick enough, last time I drove to southampton there were two cameras on the way that werent on the current database that the RA2 notified me of(both units were updated before my trip).

the laser won't really help you anyway as it'll probably be too late once it's detected a laser. I think all these units have a database of locations for speed camera vans though so it'll warn you when you approach a common spot for them giving you time to slow down even if nothing is there.

The one and only reason is the accuracy of the database, as good as pocketGPS's is its no where close to blackspots one. I've seen an overlay of uk with pocketgps data compared to blackspots and there were a shed load missing or in the wrong place.
Thats where most of your money goes when you by a roadangel/snooper gps device, access to there database. Without there databases those companys are nothing so they make dam sure they are acurate and up to date.

plus the pocketgps is being commercialised now and will have to be paid for, ok not that much (£2 per download) but still there is a concern about how accurate the database is/will be.

i use tomtom go and the pocketgps database its it seems to serve its purpose but i dont think its accurate, and the only reason why i dont have a GPS based standalone detector is cos i have to many gadgets on my dash as it is!

seriously though i dont think you can compare a standalone GPS detector like the RA to tomtom with an overlay addon. GPS standalone wins hands down imo. Its built for the purpose where tomtom wasnt.
