I've been playing Company of Heroes, and realised i haven't played any strat games in years.

What have i missed in the last few years? Last one i played was probably Command and conquer tiberium wars...yearrsss ago

I have Civ 4 as well, got it when it first came out, and never liked it. Thought it was a proper RTS game but its all turn based. Just don't get its appeal really. Tried a couple of Total war demos (empire total war and napoleon total war) - didn't think much of these either. Damn hard too. Only played em for a couple of skirmishes though.

Depends what kind of strategy you like. If you like base building and proper long battles then go for supreme commander, which is also a vast leap in control interfaces for RTS.

Starcraft 2 is coming out soon, C&C 4 has just come out and is really not worth the disk its printed on.

If you're wanting really long battles, then Settlers 6 or Supreme commander.

I'm going to throw in Star Wars: Empire at War and Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds and also Star Trek Armada.

Is settlers 6 better than s7? i have the demo of s7, which seems quite good, but it wouldn't play when my internet connection died, so i'm not gonna buy that...

I'm going to have to say Civ but you already said you didn't like that, although I have no idea where you got the idea it was a RTS game, they have been making civ games and clones for 20 years and they always have been TBS games.

As for other games, the cupboard has been a bit bare of recent years the only thing I can think of is Heroes of Might and Magic V. Unfortunately this is also TBS but I think they can be picked up quite cheaply now if you want to take a punt. If you like it HOMMIII and IV are also very good games.

In the near future we have Starcraft 2 and Civ 5 (which will be TBS and you will probably hate it as well) out this year.

My suggestion everytime these threads come up. Supreme Commander Forged Alliance. Nothing comes close when it comes to scale, depth or strategy.

Dawn of War two similer style to company of heroes but the campaigns are pretty good.

You just missed it with the new expansion on steam for 20quid the other week.

I would say give medieval total war a shot or rome even as with the mods these are great.

Large scale war: Total War series. Supreme Commander

RTS with RPG elements: Warhammer DOW2. Warcraft3

Frentic clicking RTS: Starcraft. C&C series. Red Alert

Those are the ones I can think of atm.

Some other highly enjoyable ones: Men of War, Commandos, Company of Heroes.

I agree with all of these statements! I want to emphasize how amazing Starcraft 2 is though. I have been playing the beta. The campaign editor has endless possibilities you can even make FPS games with it!

after CoH it's a tough one since it's arguably the best RTS out there. Have you tried the mods Joint Operations and Eastern Front?

otherwise you can dust off old copies of Age of Empire, Starcraft or C&C

Always sounds so appealing. Then you play them. Of course you had to spend 3 hours trying to work out how to get them to run on your pc first and then you realise that the games you held to such high regard were infact made 20 years ago and quite frankly are poo if it wasn't for the nostalgia.

Also everyone recommends supcom, I do my self, but no one plays it. Online its pretty dead. I tryed going back to it but it seems the game has screwed up. I installed FA and then the orginal because I forgot they didn't make it simple like COH, even though its the same company, which has now made it so when ever I try to log on it gets stuck patching the orginal supcom and never actually finds any updates because it all got patched when I installed FA.

I played FA years ago and even then you were hard pressed to fill up a 4x4 and usualy there was never more then 10 games up at the lobby. I know there was probably another 20 in game at the time but still, you'd expect better from one of the greatest rts's ever. Quite frankly, everyone loves it but no one plays it. The lobbies are also empty with no one talking.

When I played empire earth for about 2 years straight the lobby's were packed with people and games and that game wasn't anywhere near half the game supcom is. What gives?

I don't want to get off topic, or hijack a thread, but is there a pacific mod for CoH? I know of the Eastern Front one, but not sure if there is a Pacific one.

That game vanilla is quite bad, and gets boring fast. However, if you download the blitzkrieg mod, you're looking at a game that will give hours of non-stop fun.

To this day the blitzkrieg mod has made my £7 steam purchase one of the best value for money games I've ever owned.

I saw 700 players online last time I checked  and Halcyon was full (I was defaulted into Freeport). Even the foreign language lobbies had some people in them.
