I have a bit of decorating to do. Ideally the room needs new skirting. But what's the best stuff and application tips to fill in gaps that have opened up between the wall and the skirting board.

i agree with the guys above ^^ just don't rush it let it dry fully and if its a larger gap do 2/3 fills after each drying session to build it up.
If the gap is huge then use some other filler not caulk as you don't want to fill large gaps/holes.

Definitely caulk as above.

However I've found some cheaper caulks to be less dense and/or gritty and so not as easy to shape and keep in place while applying. I've found Unibond Flexible Decorating filler to be excellent although it's a little dearer (under £2 at screwfix) but hardly expensive either given the coverage.

I applied caulk around all internal window frames, architrave and skirting as I renovated my first home (a 1920's house where everything flexed!) and it was the winner after trying a number of caulks.

Absolutely agree with the above - decorators caulk.

I use it on skirting joints and also stud/wall joins and along ceiling joins - basically anywhere that would have a form of movement.

Yup Caulk is good for this.

I use Dulux trade stuff from the Dulux decorating centre. Its a big tube for just over £2

Gently run a damp cloth along it once you've put it in for a nice neat finish

polycell flexible gap filler in a cartridge, like caulk but stays more flexible. Caulk tends to dry out and crack. If you use a fugi tool you can level it off so you don't loose the profile / sharpness of how you cut the paint in from the wall to the skirting and vice versa.
