Hi all,

Friend of mines CPU borked and he'd like to get a new one. Obviously I'll grab him a new mobo as well, but a bit out of the loop on CPUs, so was wondering what CPU to advise him to get?

Any help would be great.

The i5 6600k (skylake, socket 1151) would be your best sub £200 CPU.

With a Z170 motherboard you'll get all the latest connectors etc. and can overclock to 4.5-4.8 GHz depending on your cooler and the golden-ness of the particularly CPU.

Unfortunately not sub-£200 any more, but almost. This is the answer for gaming OP.

Other respectable options at various price points:

The performance pretty much follows the price, but a £180 CPU isn't three times faster than a £60 one if you see my point.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I was advising him to go for the 6600k but in the end he decided to go for the 6500.

He's not a heavy gamer so it should be fine for him. He was running on one of those AMD XII cpus that can be unlocked to 4 cores, but it kept crashing so this should still be a huge improvement.

Good choice, as time goes on the answer to the question what is the best sub £200 cpu may end up getting smaller and smaller.

One day it might turn into what is the only cpu i can get for sub £200?
Answer: Pentium Dual Core G4400 3.30GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor £199.99
