Hi I have a Canon 350d and am looking for a telephoto lens, it will be used mainly for landscapes and motorsports.

The ones I am looking at are,

Canon EF 75-300mm f4/5.6 USM MK3 £168-99

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro DG (Canon AF) £179-99

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro (Canon AF) £114-99

Or is it worth spending a little more on

Canon EF90-300mm f/4-5.6 USM (Black) £219.99

Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR DI (Canon AF) £214.99

Canon EF 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM £252.99

Thanks, sorry for the long list. :)

Dang I thought you were going to be a Nikon owner :p and then I could've recommended the AF 80-200 F:2.8 ED which is a beast (I'm currently wanting after one), and can be had in various guises from about £230 s/h.

I use the Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR DI with my 300D & I'm very happy with it :). You can get it for £205 if you hunt around

Tamron 55-200mm f/4-5.6 LD Macro Di ll

Great lens for the price, checkout the reviews

With a 200mm rather than a 300mm lens will I notice a big difference in the zoom capabilities. (for want of a better phrase)

Another vote for the Sigma 70-300 APO, Very good for the price, I would try hunting around a bit or going 2nd hand because I got mine for a lot less than that. It was off a very nice chap on these boards ;)

A 200mm lens on the 350d is equivalent to 300mm lens on a 35mm film camera.

But yes, a 300mm lens will give you more zoom!
Best thing to do is go into to a large high street camera shop ;-) and have a go with them.

The tamron is a much smaller lens than the sigma 300 apo, I have used both and prefer the tamron. I also find the tamron has quicker AF.

Just my opinion of course

So it looks like it is between the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro DG or the Tamron 55-200mm f/4-5.6 LD Macro Di ll, which will work best for AF for motorsport? Also is everyone in agreement that there is no better lens sub £250 that is worth the extra cash.

Thanks for the continuing help. :)

I have the canon and have never had a problem with it. Remember you can get £35 cashback with it as well. I can't compare to the sigma though.

You send off the reciept and barcode from the box to canon and they put it in your bank account. If it is a deciding factor, check the box when you buy it, but AFAIK the offer is still running.

i am probably selling my sigma 70-300 if you are interested as have recently got a new lens to replace it. :)

i was very happy with it considering the price.

I thought the cashback was only on the 70-300 IS USM? (The one they're having "issues" with and are out of stock most places). wotrth checking before purchasing.

IIRC, the newer Sigma 70-300 APO DG easily beats the Canon 75-300 in terms of image quality.....
