looking at buying two TFT monitors soon.

i'm a web designer/programmer so going for the two monitor set-up

in my spare time i'm an hardcore cs 1.6 player so i need the lowest reponse times going.

also i'm looking to keep it under 19inch and also no widescreens as i find they are dirt for anything bar watching movies which i have a 40inch samsung in the living room to cater for that job.

is there also any 19inch monitors that do 1600x1200? i'm not very up on the whole TFT scene as the last time i looked into them you needed to keep the resolution at the preset one for optimal whatever-amajig. it's been awhile since i looked into them.

but i must stress the need for low response time and keeping it non widescreen.

i'll be pumping these two monitors with an HIS ATi x1950xtx 512mb if that's any use.
any replies greatly appreciated.

sorry the sig needs updating, i have a new rig since then.

no 19" models will do above 1280 x 1024 res im afraid. The Viewsonic VX922 would be an excellent choice for gaming, arguably the fastest in the market right now :)

Widescreen is excellent for gaming. I've played UT2004 instagib (probably the quickest DM around) in widescreen and the extra field of view gives you an edge. When widescreen is supported in the game (admittedly it's not always supported, dunno about CS 1.6) I'd say there's no drawbacks to it at all. Aiming is just as easy, and there's some very quick widescreen monitors around now.

I've also played GRAW on the PC in widescreen, one of the hardest tactical shooters around, and again there's no drawbacks only advantages. Also every 360 title supports widescreen, Rainbow Six Vegas, Gears of War etc, all look great in widescreen.

Going back to your question though, if you want the quickest screens around that means a sacrifice in viewing angles and often in colour reproduction, which isn't ideal for any sort of design work. You're probably thinking viewing angles aren't a big deal, but you'll often find with TN panels that the vertical viewing angles are so limited that the same colour looks ~5% darker at the top of the screen than at the bottom, and that the colours shift just through moving your head up and down a few inches.

Maybe get a quick TN for gaming and a MVA/IPS for the web design.

1.6 has 16:10 and 16:9 resolutions if you select widescreen in the options, not high enough to be native but they will scale fine.

on this note, i too am a very hardcore 1.6 gamer and have played a high level! i am looking at a widescreen monitor to play with ideally something like 20-22", the problem i have is that i play 1.6 at a resolution of 640x480 (i know this is a low res for my rig but i have my reasons for playing 1.6 at this res just cba to go into it), would this propose any problems? can i run it with borders? or will it stretch and loose some viewing area?

im very interested as to why you would run at 640x480, does it improve hit detection/rate or something? I think the only way you could do it would be running it in a window, otherwise it gets stretched and looks awful because its not the native res.

reason for 640x480 is because i've played with that res since i started playing cs - 6 years ago - since frames per second and monitor refresh rates affect your sensitivity of your mouse ingame i'm trying as much to minimise a change in my sensitivity, cause any noteable difference is enough to put me off.

Wouldnt be much point playing in 640 on a tft because the refresh rate would only be 60 / 75 regardless of res. They used BenQ 2ms panels at CPL this winter, not sure they went down to well though.

yeh i saw that.

anyways i feel like i need two monitors so i'll be getting two tft's in the near future, but i'll still keep my giant iiyama 19inch vision master pro454 for 1.6
