best thermal paste for CPU?

I've always used Arctic Silver 5 and never had a problem.

Personally I'd just go for a popular one and make sure you apply it properly. The temperatures differences between different decent pastes are small.

AS5 is still one of the best but gets better with curing over 200 hours. MX-2 works right from the start.

I have recently been using both AS5 and MX-2 and there isn't really anything in it much.

As has already been said - there is very little difference between the best pastes.

If you want fast and easy, Arctic Cooling MX-2 is very good and completely non-conductive electrically, so you can get it on components without worrying. It's definitely recommended for GPUs because of this.

AS5 from Arctic Silver is probably the most cost-effective, but it does need roughly 100 hot->cold->cycles to 'cure'.

If you want the absolute best, then you want Shin-etsu MicroSi MPU3.7 which is £4 for 1g (enough for 1CPU) and worth every penny if you need to get the very last 0.5C off your temperatures.
