Best thermal paste?

Hi guys.

Just ordered some parts for me 1st build, and went for Arctic Silver paste.

But from some review it seems that the OCZ freeze paste is better?

What do you guys think? Should I re-order?

I've used AS3, AS5 and MX-2, and MX-2 has given me the best results.

Plus it's much easier to apply and is non-conductive.

I sadly ran out during my last swap over, and had to use AS5, which has resulted in a 5 degree temp rise because I could be bothered to spread thinly over the heatspreader, just did the line down the middle thing, which I do with MX-2.

Usually use AS of some type, gone through AS3 / 5 and Ceramique.

Depends on the cooling methord your going to use, i found Ceramique better for Phase since it didn't go as hard, running AS5 at the moment on my WC setup and its getting good enough temps.

Im just going to be light gaming, and normal stuff. To be quite fair, im not that bothered about a few degrees, but I like to get the most from my money :)

Shall I just stick with the AS5?

I read a review of a Thermal Paste shootout once, and the OCZ Freeze came up trumps in most tests. The AS5 was actually quite dissapointing, but the manufacturer's response was that AS5 needed something like 200 days to reach optimal operating environment.

In most cases I dont think my CPU cooler has ever stayed attached that long, be it for an upgrade / cleaning.

So my next build is going to be with OCZ Freeze.

I normally just stick with Zalman paste which comes in the nail varnish style bottle so you can paint the paste on, saves having to whip out your credit card and try to level your blob of paste out :)

200 Hours. And several thermal cycles (Turning pc off enough to cool down and then heat back up).
It just makes sure that the paste has filled all the microscopic holes. After bedding in the temps apparently reduce by 3-5 degrees.

Why bother with a 200 day cure wait, when you can buy paste that does it in 0 days.

33-way Thermal Paste Shootout

I live in HK and can't source the OCZ Freeze stuff, but I found the T-C Grease 0098 all syringed up and ready to go for a couple of quid. :)

How long does the paste last, unopened I would have thought the shelf life is pretty long.

Changing boards, Ive got an unopened tube of ac mx1 or an opened artic silver5, both 2 yeras old.

These ok or should I get some new stuff (considering it aint that expensive)?

I know the arctic silver 5 method of applying is a single line (according to the instructions) but would it be better to spread thinly?

I found AS5 a bit too thick to be able to spread thinly - if you try and spread it, it rolls into a ball a bit like blue-tac, rather than spreading like butter.
