So when IS the best time to upgrade this year? I've heard about the new size CPUs and of course DDR3, when will that begin to fall in price? I'm just stuck between possibly upgrading now, or just holding out until christmas for example.

No such thing mate, every time you build a rig there is something new and shiny around the corner, unless you build it as soon as its released, then you might be 6-12months away from the next big release. but of course you'll be paying heavily inflated prices.

there's no winning tbh

Annoying eh? Last time I upgraded from an old 754 I think it was to 939, a week later AM2 came out... Doh. The pace of technology really is infuritating; looks like i'll just upgrade next month or something I suppose :(

Yeah its a pain, i mean atm you could wait until November thats not too far away.. a few new bits coming out then. X38 and the new nvidia cards.. however i doubt DDR3 will be at a reasonable price by then so im not sure ddr3 is feasible

at the end of the day you get what you pay for, spend £1000 now, spend £1000 in a month, sure you might get slightly better performance, but still not a lot more imo

i mean i got my AM2 rig here.. a lot of people **** me off for not going core 2, but for the price i paid theres not a whole lot of difference, and if i had waited i would have been without a computer for ages and well that just defies the point!

Remind me not to ask you to predict my lottery numbers. ;)

I don't think there is any new technologies on the horizon that will be implemented soon and make a huge difference to what you should be going for. It might depend slightly on what your budget is but DDR3 isn't really necessary yet since DDR2 still has quite a bit of life/potential in it currently and the current Core2Duos overclock well. :)

Is current DDR3 not slower than current DDR2 due to it's very high timings?

There Gigabyte DS3R mobo seems very good, supports DDR2/3 and the new 45nm CPU's that are on there way, has good future potential.

PCI-E 2.0 cards will work on current mobo's, I think there aint much difference, currently the PCI-E clock is 100Mhz and PCI-E2.0 runs at 175Mhz or something like that, I dunno, more bandwidth it has too, I guess the PCI-E 2.0 cards will be slightly slower on mobo's that only support PCI-E.

hope thats right

as a bleeding edge motherboard and GPU card would clear out the bank just before xmas and the kids may end up with nothing from Ah erm Santa.

Bowza

Best time to upgrade is when you have to, not a moment before.
