Or two?

Building my PC up again and wanting it leaner and meaner, no more bloat.
Do like games but never really totally got into new Total War but do love strategy game style ... used to own the original Shogun Total War and loved it, have a few of the new ones and was spoilt for choice but wonder what you folk would consider the most essential Total War strategy game and is it worth buying the extras for it?

Noticed someone posted about Civ VI in another thread on the forums, never realised mine was not at its best so bought the latest update add-on on Steam just now and all good .. looking fwd to getting into it again actually!
PC specs are fine, its over the top stuff, no problems there.

But for Total war, could use some recommendations, there are so many TW games now its a bit bewildering !!

Lots are going to complain here, but I still love Rome 2.
And you most definitely want the first 2 Warhammer games.

Interesting you mention this, sort of know about Warhammer in a very different table top style, what about Warhammer is it you like about this on the PC format? Not criticising, just very curious and tempted ... hmm?

Otherwise its Shogun 2 getting installed again and will check on Steam for any mandatory extras .. Thanks all

I like the heroes style of gameplay in Warhammer series, but also the massive variations of units, so no race is alike.
As Goodie mentions above - Empire - I bought this on DVD release day and is always on my HDs (along with Rome 2). Empire is a huge game with satisfying Naval combat.
After playing the above games, get yourself the popular overhaul mods such as Stainless Steel's series or Radious' series.

I have huge nostalgia for the original TW:Medieval, but TW:Warhammer is the best one for me now ( parts 1,2 & 3 for access to the full Mortal Empires campaign ).

Lots of the older ones are classic. My favourite would have to be Rome 1. Least favourite Rome 2. Warhammer is also fun.
Most of the other ones in the last 10 years have been reskins, honestly I went back to play Shogun 2 after Warhammer 3 and the tech/graphics/engine seems the same. If you asked me back 10-15 years ago where I thought Total War games would be now I would be imagining battles 10x bigger.

Medieval 2 for me (although I liked Empire as well), I really can't get on with the newer versions of the game (post Rome 2) I know some people may prefer the new style gameplay but I'm really not interested in any 'fantasy' version.

I am thinking of getting Attilla this weekend just for when this mod comes out.

There is also a medieval mod too for Attila iirc.

I think Warhammer 3 will be the best for sure within a year. The immortal empires map is pretty special with all factions playing differently. Just needs some more polish.

Edit - you do need all 3 Warhammer games and dlc though to get the full experience.

Always one joker lol

On a serious note, only total war game I've not played, is it actually worth it or is this a holy hand grenade you just tossed in?

Always loved ancient Greek mythology and history as much as Roman but the game never jumped out to me.

It was free on launch, only played base game. It’s ok but did not have any wow factor for me like say Warhammer.

I really have enjoyed pretty much most total war games but due to the variety of units and factions I think the Warhammer games are the most fun to play. I do like the historical total war games though.

Rome 1 is the one I keep going back to honestly. Maybe it's partly nostalgia, but it just had a great feel to it. Medieval 2 would be 2nd place for me.

I haven't actually bothered playing many of the more recent ones though as after reading reviews and watching some videos etc I wasn't so keen.

Tempted by three kingdoms for £15 though...
