best upgrade after E8600

I have an E8600 overclocked at 3.6ghz running on an Abit IP35 XE pro with 4gigs of OCZ gold, I bought that machine from Overclockers and I have to say that I am fully happy of it but I am now looking to get the extra kick.

I do mainly web development with many applications and files opened at the same time (Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator) and even if my machine is quite fast things I have a feeling that it could be faster.

What would be the best bang for the bucks at the moment in term of upgrade for the following case:

1. Fastest current CPU supported by my Abit IP35 XE pro.
2. Fastest current combo (CPU / motherboard / ram).

Should I get better ram than OCZ Gold ? Will Quad core be better in term of global performance even if the Q9650 does not beat the E8600 in term of raw speed. Would Intel i7 be even better than Quad core ?

Thanks for your help

yeah your 8600 should do 4.25-4.5 really, certainly 4 with ease
Ive just moved form the 8600 to a 9550 which Ive currently clocked t 3.8, but I havent started playing with it yet, just dropped it in at that speed. Your options would be to go for this at £178, not worth the extra £100 for the 9650 imo or go for new i7 system such as the bundle advertised at top of page, thats £560 tho so quite a bit more

Thanks for your answers guys, I guess that if I overclock my E8600 up to 4Ghz I'll have to raise the cpu fan speed also which I set quite low by default since I like silence :)

My e8500 does 4ghz on the stock cooler. It will do 4.2ghz but i have to use more vcore. from 1.31 to 1.38 and it gets a bit hot. Orthos can get to 70c. GTA4 can get to about 66c. Can't really be bothered with another cooler as it does a nice round 4GHz, good temps and nice knowing it's well within its limit :) I think at 4ghz orthos sometimes touches 62c then drops to about 57c. Most games don't makes it past the 40's :) I'm happy

Well if i were you id keep that CPU and just upgrade my Motherboard and CPU cooler.

I used to have an Asus P5Q Deluxe (P45)

With that very CPU in it, got it to 4.2GHZ with a decent cooler such as the Coolermaster V8 CPU Cooler

Plus your case cooling makes a huge difference too, i had/have for my previous build and current, The Antec 1200, its just a fantastic case for people who choose the air cooling route.

Anyway hope this helped a little :)

1+ for keeping your E8600

Really only if you do a lot of 3d rendering like i do, do you need quad core cpu's. I think photoshop etc only support 2 core anyway. The E8600 is still an excellent cpu.

Wow a E8600 still at stock that is crazy!
I am a novice overclocker and mine is at 4.7 and stable on a mid range air cooler...Get in that bios now!

Well its not at stock is it, but its true that it should be able to go a lot higher. I have an E8500 running at 4.4GHz without much fuss, 4GHz should be easy as pie :p

Try that first before spending money, a quad core thats going to be a noticeable improvment over your current CPU is going to be pretty pricey!! From where you are now, Id say the most sensible upgrade for your money would be to an i7 setup
