Hey guys,

Getting paid on 2nd of jan and its finally my time for an upgrade. Gonna do my whole rig basically. Lookin to spend around a grand or so, including a monitor.

Currently have an a64 3200, 1 gig ram, x1950pro, 19 inch hyundai L90D+ monitor and samsung spinpoint HDD.

Gonna be upgrading to a quad core with 2-4gig ram depending on whats recommended, vista 64, 22-24inch monitor so will be looking to game at at least 1650x wateva 1650 games at i dont know as never had widescreen just seen numbers floating about :)

So i was gonna get a GTX or new GTS but have since seen people talking about crossfire radeon cards. I was under the impression that the radeons were mad slow compared to the nvidia offerings, but whats the general opinion on the GFX to go for in a new rig?

Looking to spend 2-300 i guess on graphics, i dont know what is a reasonable price/performance these days. Any input much appreciated.

Was also hoping to wait for the new nvidia cards n spend more on my gfx but doesnt look like its gonna be released for months and look at my rig :P it cant wait months.

best bang for buck is an 8800GT which is meant to be coming down in price soon (or so rumours say)

for a bit more something like an OCUK GTX is quite cheap, the same price as some GTSes, which isn't a bad deal.

I'd say the new 8800gts is probably the best single card to look at. the gtx and the ultra are overpriced in comparison. you can tell the new gts by its 512mb memory allocation the older ones have 320mb and 640mb. you do not want these.

nvidia is currently beating ati in performance but ati has them at price. also crossfire scales better than sli, so consevably a crossfire setup can out perform better performing cards from nvidea in sli.

i would always buy the best performing single card myself. although crossfire/sli is tempting to play with. for my needs a hd3870 would suit me due to its low power draw and low temps as i run small form factor PCs.

^yeah...the GTX is still the top performing card at higher resolutions...especially when you start heaping on the AA+AF

most of the GTSes are around the 220-230 mark
and the OCUK GTX is 244

I know which I'd buy

don't think I'd like to buy a £200+ gfx card with a 1 year warrenty.

It is quite right that the gtx/ultra and even the old gts 640's do out perform the new gts at higher resolutions/aa in most cases.

i think however it is a really bad time to buy a gfx card with the new ones almost out. id prolli re use the x1950pro in the new system and buy a new card when they come out. they should be substantually better than the 8800 series.

On the GTX spectrum it would have to be either a BFG (life time warranty) or EVGA (10 year warranty)

The OcUK only offers a 1 year warranty, other manufacturers range between 1-3 year warranty

The problem with that is that there is always a new card around the corner, not only that but no one really has a set date on the card, might have to wait 4 or 5 months for it which is just too long with the rig i have got chugging along :)
