What would readers recommend, and how much of a budget would I need to get a noticeable increase in performance from an existing rig with two stock 5850s in Crossfire?

I know I'd be saving something in electricity bills at least....

I think you'd notice the difference even on an R9 380 to be honest but something like an R9 390 or 390x would last you a few more years. Or if you wanted to go team green a gtx 970 is a good option, either a 390 or 970 would both run you about £250

your options for that price range are either a gtx 960 or an r9 380, I'd try and go for a 4GB version if you can. Can't say about performance much as i can't find any benchmarks comparing them but a 7970 which is around the same performance is over double the performance of 1 5850 so i'd imagine you'd see a nice difference. Also better driver support etc. I owned an R9 380 and it ran everything fine at 1080p maxed or almost maxed with good frame rates.

Your best value for money will be second hand, like a 290 or 290X / GTX780.

As mentioned, though, when buying new you're looking at something like an R9 380 (equivalent to an overclocked 7970). It should be a considerably smoother experience with much better minimum fps. Just make sure your PSU and CPU are up to scratch.
