I currently have £750 to spend on upgrades on my computer which I built last year.

It consists of the:

  1. 800w xsilence PSU
  2. Asus maximus formula 2 Mobo
  3. Q6700 @ 2.66 Ghz CPU
  4. 2GB PC6400 HyperX RAM
  5. XFX HD 4870 XXX 512MB GFX
  6. 2 x 500GB HDD
  7. SupremeFX X-Fi came with Mobo Audio
  8. Freezer 7 Pro cooler
  9. Storm scout case
  10. G15 Keyboard
  11. G9 mouse
  12. Speakers are some £5 things which suck!
  13. 22 inch monitor

I am a programmer(Eclipse IDE, Visual Studios), I also do freelance webdesign (DreamWeaver, Photoshop). I love watching HD movies only with my 5.1 headphones the speakers are ******, I also do allot of gaming in spair time, Grid, Dirt 2, Battlefield BC 2, MW2, etc etc... So really just an all round computer.

I was going to go for the i7 overclocked bundle and a 60Gb ssd. Sell my previous motherboard, ram, cpu, gfx, then use that hopefully to get a new GFX card / add to buy a new GFX card as I do have the case, psu... etc. However I am not sure if that is a good way to go as I know my CPU can be oced to 3.6... Would it be really worth upgrading to the i7?

Edit*

Or the Asus Xonar D2X 7.1 PCI-Express Sound Card and the z550 5.1 system as it seems to be the only DTS system and a SSD to quicken up the programming...

4gb of RAM would be a good move :) Selling up like you stated wouldn't be the worst move ever. You would then have more money for a completely new rig.

If it was me, i'd be overclocking that q6700 and eeeking out the most performance i could out of it. 3.2ghz would be very reachable and give you significant gains. I'd stick another 2gb of RAM in, maybe new GFX as well if you game a lot. This would be the most cost effective upgrade solution for the time being.

An SSD would give you the best noticeable performance increase.

Sounds like a good plan to me

Replace your parts with the above which will spank what you currently have, sell those bits you replace and use that money for SC + speakers and if any left over SSD

Given your uses you would see a massive boost moving to i7 system

Ditto with above and dont forget the 64bit Os if going with a ram upgrade.

Thank you for all the replies!

I like the setup you gave 95thrifles, I put togeather an i5 as I heard the i7 is a little overkill? i5 is enough for what I need apparently...

Leaving me £130 change to get the SSD, I picked the EVGA as it has 10 year warranty and also I have heard many good things about there GFX cards. I am not so sure on going to the i5 seeing as I really wouldn't see much difference, but I could change out my whole rig and be happy for 2 years. :)

iirc the gigabyte gtx460 runs cooler and quieter, but if you "really" need the 10 year warranty go for the evga
