After messing around for a while with DK2 - some Eve, various demos, fps etc - what struck me most was how immersive it is moving around and looking at things from inside a 3d gameworld. More so than from what we'd consider as traditional gameplay. Shooting, jumping around etc all took a back seat to what I really wanted to do, which was explore. Which got me thinking about the type of gaming really suits VR and hence this thread.

Anything that involves exploration and having time to take things in seems ideal. For me at least. Something like Legend of Grimrock would be perfect. Or a turn based rpg. Portal. Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. If anyone remembers Knightmare on tv from back in the day - a game like that with puzzles and creatures to interact with would be great. Especially in co-op. Walking around with a mate, working stuff out, finding secrets, battling beasts - sign me up!

Any thoughts?

Personally I'm looking forward to the possibilites of exploring real locations. It would take a lot of time but imagine if part of the amazon rainforest was filmed 'completeley' and you were then free to walk around it. Or the pyramids, imagine school kids actually being able to walk around them as they taught. So much potential

I love exploring in games, I remember playing Oblivion for the first time, when you finally get out of the dark, dank sewers and are greeted with that amazing, lush vista... okay so the graphics weren't that great but at the time was still impressive and you just wanted to dive into the forest and see what was out there.

I hardly get anything done in GTA5 as I'm always stopping to take photos of sunrises, sunsets or night time city skylines.

I think VR will be like 3D and motion control, for a while every developer will try and shoehorn it into their game as a selling point with little thought of what the player will really get out of it and whether or not the game actually needs it.

Yes, the Kinect all over again :D

I am a big Elite Dangerous player and popping on the DK2 for the first time in that game was all the porn I needed. I am more for the sitting down experiences as well and don't have the room to run about in my small room but if they can develop something that lets me sit but run forward etc (like that big huge machine but in tiny form) I am all for it. Good job I am a flight sim fan :D

The original half-life. Say that because the close tight internal nature of the complex plays perfect in 3d. One of the best gaming experiences I've had just in stereo 3d, so looking for forward to returning with VR. The big daddy is alien isolation though... the clues kinda in the title:)

What about a Final Fantasy - just rather from watching from above you're standing in front of some 100ft monster and seeing everything in first person.

I can see elite dangerous being the absolute dogs for VR. Space flight, exploration, your physical movements on throttle and stick mirrored by the in game model, stunning visuals, a UI that reacts to your head movements (virtual menus pop up from the flight console when you look at them). It's just perfect. If I was going to buy VR, it'd be for that.

Would like a 1st person witcher 3 in VR though if they could get the control method to feel right

I think the possibilities for strategy games like the Total War series or something like Sins of a Solar Empire are also intriguing. Not my sort of game, but I wonder how FIFA might translate to VR, or even some sports games like Madden (more interesting to me) which are currently the preserve of consoles? Having that third person view in 3d would potentially be extremely immersive.

Other than the above, some of the exercise possibilities are interesting. There is one such system called evbove, which is a VR bike trainer. I'm pretty certain the trailers showed the rider with an Oculus, although I'm not sure how long you could do it before overheating your face.
