Hi All

Just got a nice little windfall of money and decided to spend it on a nice new HD Ready LCD TV :):)

32" is to small & 42" is probably to big. 37" would be just nice.

Want it to be fully HD compatable, 1080i, HDMI, LCD (less chance of screen burn).

Looking to spend £800-£900. Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers

My dad just got a Sharp Aquos LC37P50E LCD Widescreen TV. Was about £850. Im not hot on this topic but on some programs (especially world cup) there are like pixels around all the players etc. The resolution is 960 x 540 so probably not too good but it looks ok on most programs.

P.S. Sorry to hijack but can anybody explain the pixels around players on world cup etc-German Cameras or bad resolution?

sky digital-is that bad and will it improve?

No it'll probably get worse as it used to be better. They are needing more and more of the available sattelite bandwidth to carry the new HD channels. When you consider a HD channel carries twice that of a normal one and also that the number of channels on sky has grown quite a bit over the years you can understand that they have to rob peter to pay paul so to speak. Live coverage is especially bad as the live broadcasts have to be compressed in real time to feed via sat to recieving station before being rebroadcast so less cpu time is available to use the best compression algorithms. I've noticed the roundup coverage always seems to look better.

You will certainly notice if you flick through the channels that some are worse than others, ie try some of the higher numbered discovery channels like discovery wins.. some of them are like watching badly compressed avi porn :)

My brother got a 40" LCD today and it is terrable. Pixels out of line everywhere. He is using freeview and it is worse for some channels than others.

So is this a LCD problem? Are Plasmas effected??

Its not a "problem" exactly, and it effects all TVs, it's just more visible on HD sets because of their higher resolution. It happens because they are trying to use as little bandwidth as possible (bandwidth = money), therefore reducing the bitrate to a point where it does indeed look like 70's German porn.

There is nothing that can be done to prevent it and it is likely to get worse as they shift more and more bandwidth into HD channels and the 10 million strong band of shopping channels.

While the above is also true - its very noticable on sets above 32" and esp on 40+, even a decent SD signal would be broken up on this size screen as the line structure was never designed to be displayed this large and with a poorly encoded transmission (or low bitrate) it just makes it even worse

I believe plasmas for some reason make it look a little better ( dont ask me why) but thats just what I have read on here I havent got 1st hand experience of new plasmas at all

I have had mine a week and not noticed any buzzing. now I have got the settings tweaked and the panel seems to have been 'run in' I am very happy with my purchase. be warned it needs some work on the 'out of the box' settings to get things looking good

What's the Samsung R74 37" LCD all about? Looks like a nice set + much cheaper than the 32" Bravia !

The R74 is a top screen and the latest from samsung. the sony's have always been the most expensive end of the market, and in their benefit they do have a good wega picture engine. However they use the same panels as samsung from a shared plant and I have found on most LCD's that the stuff like dynamic contrast, ambient light sensing, noise reduction a nd so on get turned off by the majority of users including sony owners. So you really have to test these things in a store to ensure you actually want to pay the extra.
