My wife has a c2d cpu and an 8800 card that the fan has now gone on...I am lookig for best value upgrade with max budget of £120, prefer a little lower if possible. I dont want to bother with a repair, the card has an issue when playing games where brightness drops unless you turn it up to 100% in the drivers under the desktop, games ignore changes to brightness setting ingame

Current favourite game is left4dead, preferably played at 1680x1050 with as many bells and whistles as possible.

Can someone recommend the best buy for me at that price range? :)

Thanks

if you stretch an extra £20 the ocuk 260 216 would be a sweet replacement and quite an upgrade!

If L4D is one of the only played games, then a 4770 or 4850 (80ish fps 4xAA 16xAF) would be quite a good buy - 4770 is about 5-10% slower than a 4850. However slightly more intensive games like Far Cry 2 would cause them to struggle at that res - 25-27 fps on the 4850.

If it was me, I would stretch to a GTX 260 (100 ish fps in L4D 4x AA 16x AF, 47ish in Far Cry 2 with 4xAA) and OCUK have one for £139.99 so an extra £20, but depending on what you need could be a better buy.

I'd say a 4850 would be the better choice. The 4870 512MB isn't worth an extra £30 over the 4850, especially what it's going to be used for.

This 4850 is only £93.

XFX 4850

I disagree. I think it's definitely worth the extra £30.

Would also opt for the GTX 260 from another site over the 4870 though.

On balance the price attacted me to the 4850. Arrived today and all fitted, runs great so very happy. Thanks for the advice!

I did consider the 4870 but my wife is not a great games player, L4D is all that attracts her at the moment until Diablo3 is released. I am sure the cheaper card will keep her well satisfied unil its time for an upgrade in another 18 months or so. :)
