I think that is a really hard question to answer. It really all depends on what you are looking at really in terms of cost,features,size,style and accessories.
Now it seems a lot of people are going for the LG and Samsung 26/32" models.
Best place I would suggest you look at is avforums.com
I had a similar question to what you had not long ago and spent months looking for the perfect set. I was looking at a top end price of £1500 with a stand and I didn't want Plasma.
After looking at what I consider the best value for money in terms of size, style and accessories I went for the Sony KFDE50A12U a 50" 3LCD Rear Projection Unit. This cost me just under £1300 with delivery and a stand was included in the price. So if you have the room then why not consider one of these.
I am so glad that I went for this set although it looked huge at first and a little overpowering at first it seems to fit really nice and is great for watching some of my fav movies and getting that cinematic experience at home.
I'm sure that others have their own ideas on this but I am happy with my product. If you give us a little more info such as what sort of price range you are looking at then I think I can give you more model specific help.
