Best value sat-nav with US maps?

I realise you can get one with a hire car while out there - but looking at the cost of doing so, it seems it might be better to get it all here, and then I'll have my own sat nav to show for it :)

(I don't actually like sat navs and prefer to make my own way, HOWEVER I can't trust I will be able to do that in Cali, and using Google maps on my phone when I inevitably get lost will cost LOADS in roaming data charges).

So anyway, I hear the Navigo is a good bet, as it can load TomTom software? Does that sound like the best route to take (pardon the pun)?

Any recommendations? Trying to keep it as cheap as I can get without coming out with a hunk of useless plastic.

Not of any direct help but!

We actually found the USA easier to navigate than the UK (Not cali), when we picked up the hire car we got offered satnav at a much reduced rate, it was quite cheap but we didn't take it.

Personally i wouldn't bother spending the £200 plus its going to cost to get a unit and the USA maps unless you want to go back to the same place in the USA lots.

I have been to the USA three times, I only took a laptop and a GPS unit once, the other two times I went with just paper maps.

There is no point in buying a Satnav as you can navigate very easily assuming you have a passenger.

got the navigo V3 and can confirm that it can run Tomtom.

its around £50 quid and if you look around u can get the usa maps for it without going over the initial price.

recommended for a cheap sat nav

I purchased a TomTom 910 off ebay for £100-£200 (I can't remember exactly as it was a few years back) but it came with europe and North America maps and it works perfectly (although did faulter in florida as a road was moved and as the map was not updated the gps sent me the wrong way but it was easy enough to spot and return on the correct route) Worked fine east and west coast as well as canada. The benefit of this is that it works in both Europe and America and this is why I bought it. This was a few years ago but I'm assuming you should be able to pick one up for less than £100 easily now. However america is very easy to navigate as everywhere is sign-posted and most of the heavily civilised areas are all in "blocks" so with basic tourist maps you should be fine.
