looking for a version that is easy to setup as file server and i can connect to using windows 7 over a network any ideas thanks.

Does it have to be linux? At the moment I'm using nexentastor as a fileserver for my home network, which is based on SunOS but does the job perfectly. It's also GNU licensed and free.

i want to be able to use nzb...torrent....ps3 media server...serviio or similar programs
and a few apps that need linux so yes ...but thanks

anything - personally i'd go for debian stable but really its user preference, also depends how much exp you have with linux and if u want menu / gui driven or text based admin

FreeNAS is more of an appliance and so the OP would need to check for plugins to do the extra stuff mentioned in post #3.

CentOS/Fedora or Debian/Ubuntu as the two more favoured core Linux flavours but most will do the job just fine.

I use CentOS personally and am very happy with Transmission and SABnzb. Mounting Windows shares or sharing out needed a bit of playing around but then I am working via cmd line. With Gnome or other windows manager of your choice, there should be a number of config tools to make this setup pretty easy.

I'm using Ubuntu server with media tomb and samba installed. Media tomb talks UPnP so the ps3, internet radio and android devices all recognise it and can stream. Works well with pics and mp3 but I've never tried it with videos.
