Best video editing software?

Currently have a lot of videos of taken on my camera, however due to the poor lighting they are all really dark. Therefore I really need some software in which I can correct the gamma and the colour etc. Any suggestions?

Personally, I would suggest Premiere Elements 3 if you can't afford Premiere Pro.

If anyone wouldn't mind answering - what is the difference between the likes of say, Adobe Premier 7/7.5 and Adobe Premier Pro 2?

virtualdub + plugins, once you get used to it, its very powerful

If you use OSX go for Final Cut, just got my grubby hands on Final Cut Studio 2, absolutely mint!
Motion 3 is really good for special effects
