Best way of cancelling contract early or upgrading mid-contract

I'm on an 18 month contract with Vodafone @ £34.05 a month. I've got 8 months left but I'm looking to upgrade to the Desire HD.

By my calculations if I cancel my Vodafone contract early I'll be able to call it a day in 30 days and have to pay £238 for the remaining 7 months (or are there any other early cancellation fees?).

I could then sell my HD2 for around ~£240 on eBay and sign up for another contract elsewhere with the Desire HD using Quidco as usual to give me another £60+ to cover any reduction on sell price of the HD2.

However, Vodafone seem to be the only supplier about at the moment so is there anything stopping me opening up another contact with them straight away?

Are there any other tricks I can use to either upgrade early and keep my current contract or reduce how much I'll have to pay?

you can pay off the contract but not close the account and then just upgrade :-)

I think they give you a discount on your remaining period, something like 30%. As i tried to cancal my contract after moving house due to not having a signal at home. They basically said i'd have to pay the balance, which was discounted.

Once you've paid it off your free to do what you like.

you wont have to pay the VAT to cancel early.

Or you could sell your HD2 and outright buy the Desire HD and not pay off your contract and let the end of it run then drop down onto a cheaper simplicity tariff once your contract is up.
