Hi guys,

I've got an N reg cavalier on my drive that has been donated to me by my dad when he got a new car. Problem is, the MOT and tax has ran out. It's a decent runner so I think it'll pass with little to no work, but what's the best way of getting it to the garage?

The car is still owned by my dad, so he can't drive it on his DOC cover, he can get dayinsure.com on it but that isn't valid for getting tax on it....what's the cheapest and easiest way in your opinion for getting it taxed and mot'd just so i can sell it on to buy a smaller car that I can actually get insured on?

Cheers

Tom.

Well it's a bit of a catch 22 as you can't get your tax without your MOT and you can't drive on the roads without tax.

Book it in for an MOT then use dayinsure to get it insured and get it MOT'd. You'll have to risk the tax thing I think, can't see any other way around it.

cheers guys, @ onslaught really don't think that's goin to happen for a car worth like £300 max :)

or take it to a local council MOT station which is run by the council for MOTing local buses etc, however these places are also open to the public... They only carry out the MOT... they do not carry out repairs... Therefore they are much more likely to tell you the truth about the MOT results... If anything comes up you can then take it to the local garage and get all the neccessarily problems fixed without any extra un-needed 'fixes'... This could save you a few bob...

you can defernatly drive to the MOT station without an MOT if you have a booking, and i would imagine that would extend to the tax also.... can't seem to find anything about it on the dvla site though...

As you need an MOT to get tax, an un-MOT'd and un-taxed car can be driven to and from a booked MOT test, providing you have a valid insurance policy on the car.

If you get stopped, you will inform them that you are on the way to an MOT, they will call the garage you say it's booked at to confirm.

However, on the way there/back, you are not going to be able to stop off at Tesco's and do the weekly shop, you must drive directly there and back :)
