I want to have a mess about with Leopard server and a leopard client.

If it were windows I would just fire up a couple of virtual machines and install. Is there any way (legally) of doing the same thing without buying Mac hardware ?

Nope would be against the EULA I believe, think you can virtualize multiple instances of Leopard on an Apple machine though.

You can indeed virtualise Leopard Server, but only if the base platform is Leopard Server.

Only way is to buy a Mac box, Mac Pro officially suports leopard server so you don't need an xserver.

Of course you could always build a hackintosh with osx86 and install leopard server on that. Depends if more important to be legal or learn.
