Best way to apply AS5?

I've just purchased a Q6600 with the Thermalright heatsink and some Artic Silver 5.

Reading the AS5 website they say to apply a line accross the centre of the heatspreader and allow the heatsink to spread it once placed.

I'm just woundering if this is what everyone else has done, normally I'd spread it accross the top of the heatsink.

Thanks in advance, AStaley.

To tell the truth ive applied AS several different way with my current CPU and ive never noticed any difference. As long as its a very thin layer as thats the most important thing.

Squirt a Rice grain size bit of Tim on chip.
Spread it round with your finger covered in plastic.
The smallest amount/spread is required as the block will press it into the crevasses it needs to be in.
That's the way i do it anyways.

Ive found that unless your cpu and heatsink are lapped, applying a very thin layer with your finger results on poor temps because the middle of the cpu doesnt make any contact at all since most cpu's are slightly concave. Therefore, using arctic's method or a blob in the middle results in better contact. Using a credit card to spread is also fine since the straight edge ensure the as5 applied doesnt take the sahpe of the concave CPU (as long as the HSF isnt concave).

A simple way to see this is to apply the as5 and then put a piece of glass on top. If you use your finger rather than a credit card/flat surface to spread the as5 you get lots of bubbles and places where it doesnt make contact. Even if the CPU is slightly concave you run into problems if the layer you apply is thin enough.

/my experience

Or do what I do.

Read load of threads about different ways to apply AS5.

Try out each one, remove heatsink, motherboard tray, disconnect cables etc, then apply the AS5 in a different way only to settle for the first way you applied it as you have not noticed any temp drop.

The only difference being I have more cuts on my fingers from the heatsinks on the Asus Forumal motherboard when intalling the Tunic Tower :D.
