Best way to apply Thermal Compound?

Ok so I'm new to PC Building.. I have a Thermalright Ultra-120 and a q6600 CPU.

I also have AS5 Thermal compound. I'm just wondering, what is the best way to apply the compound to the CPU and also, on the TRU120 it says to spread compound on the HS itself too.. I'm not sure this is necessary so just asking, as maybe one or two of you have done this and fitted a TRU120 to your mobo.
