best way to check external hdd

I've just formatted an old HDD which used to click every so often but mostly was readable. What's the best way to check if it's safe to put data on this drive? I've ran a chkdsk /f which completed with no issues.

Any 3rd party tools that will run a full check for potential problems that a chkdsk may not cover?

What brand is it? Most HD manufactures supply some form of software diagnostic - eg - http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/seatools/ (used it recently), I know WD have one too, I'd say if you completed a chkdsk you should be fine but if you want to run a secondary test you could try seagates/WD own software
