Best way to check tire tread?

In my last MOT they pointed out three of my tyres were gettign a bit low.

What's the legal limit these days and what is the best way to check the tread mm?

I'm sure there's a few different tips and tricks on how to do so, my slave died of whipping and so I must do these horrible tasks myself.

1.6mm, and use the tred guide marker thingys....

1.6mm across three quarters breadth if I remember theory test study correctly?

I didn't think all tyres had the markers in them (coloured lines that show up when the tread depth is below tolerance?) ?

dont most tyres have depth markers so you can see if they are getting low ?

Most tyres have bits of tred inside the groves that are 1.6mm-ish high, so if they are flush with the top of the tyre then they are worn. Either that or wholes in the tred that disapear when the tred is 1.6mm down.
