Best way to copy programs to new W7 install

Okay, with the impending arrival of my new mobo, it occurs to me that I'll need to do a clean install of W7 if I plan on it functioning at all. What's the best way to go about this to save my coveted programs/settings/documents etc? Docs I can copy over onto a external HDD or partition, but what about my progs? Any ideas or just take it like a man?

Re-install them.

backup the stuff you need (files/documents) and reinstall the programs

Windows Easy Transfer is surprisingly useful, though I wouldn't solely rely on it.

Agh, was hoping I'd missed some amazing backup tool. Cheers for confirming that guys. Will try out the easy transfer tool.
