Ok guys, so I have decided to rip all my dvds onto a hard drive so that everyone in house can share them. Not too bothered about sharing them at the moment, although anyone with any info on how to set up a sort of 'media server' (shared between three PCs and a PS3) would be greatly appreciated.

My question is what program/codec to use to rip them which will give me the best quality/size/compatibility with all machines? I also only want the main movie file, not any subtitles, menu screens or extra features. Is there an easy way to do this?

Thanks

personally i'd use dvdshrink (which is free) and then imtoo (which isn't) ripping to divx, but make sure thet the PS3 can play it...

PS3, lol good luck with that, it doesn't play divx/xvid, wmv, or level 5.1 mpeg4 avc, nor does it support avi, ogm, mkv, or vob containers. Therefore you are going to have to use one of those media streaming programs that converts the videos on the fly for the ps3 to play it.

Yes, but ps3's linux implementation is far from ideal. You have to reboot from the ps3 xmb everytime you want to run linux, then reboot again to play a ps3 game.

So? It's not like it takes very long. Stop being impatient :p

You're right but it seems like it'd be worth it since the PS3's media-playing capabilities are so limited. Toss a flavor of Linux on there and use VLC to play pretty much anything. If I had to choose a format I'd stay away from WMV and lean towards divx/xvid.

Already got linux on it. To be honest the PS3 is the least of my worries at the moment. My PC and PS3 are both hooked up to the same HDTV, so if i can get the films served to my PC, it will do for now.
