Hi, im looking for a quick way to "extract" parts from the major file types with NO re encoding or loss of quaility etc. I just want to cut a certain scene and then export to the same container/format since that would be eaiser/quicker.

Whats that best way to do this. i use Avidemux but that does not handle wmv or mov files well (i have to re encode it as mp4) which takes a while even though i have a Q6600 2.4 CPU, GT460, SSD for OS, 8GB 1066 RAM. Thanks

Would be interested if you could locate such a program. All the ones I've come across will want to re-encode even if they allow you to quickly choose to in the same original file container format.

TBH stick with MP4's I tried and failed to use expression encoder (its crap), and Windows media encoder 9 it's real difficult to get the output you want i.e smooth frame rates etc.

All i have ever found on the web is you need to remux the original and strip out sound tracks and use about 4 apps before you can even get it into a WMV ready state. Also it takes hours to encode to WMV and I mean hours 8 + depending on the length of the file and thats with a sandybridge CPU.

good luck in your efforts, i think it's too much hastle personally.

Agree with Cool Breeze on MP4's

Personally, would use x264 to encode to MP4. If you're looking to cut just certain segments then use avisynth script to feed input.

I have no choice but to use wmv becasue that is the format the files are in; i would be happy to change the format/containrer but again i dont wasnt to be encoding for ages or loose quaility

Try using MPEGStreamclip. It's free, and can transcode tons of media codecs.

Place ins and outs on the clip and then export the file. Unless you know exactly what you're doing, use a lossless codec (like Quicktime Animation) so you don't lose any quality.

I recently had to convert some interior shots for a Toronto mortgage broker and ended up using this technique. Works like a charm! Just make sure your source footage is as uncompressed as possible before transcoding.
