I've got an old car that I want to sell but it needs a new gearbox. I don't have much spare time to go round scrapyards and taking the car into the garage so a low hassle option would be good.

Car is a Peugeot 306 Meridian, V reg, 85k on clock, 9 months MOT remaining. This was a recent car valuation:
Original Price £11,940
Independent Dealer £1,430
Private Good £1,070
Private Poor £320
Part Exchange £610

Option A - Find gearbox, get fixed. Sell on autotrader. Cost to fix and sell might be £250-300. Lots of hassle involved but I could possibly get £800 for it? Bear in mind 9 months MOT, low advisories, reasonable mileage.

Option B - Scrap it. Get some instant cash. Not sure of amount?

Option C - Find someone willing to buy it with the idea of fixing and reselling. Should get a bit more than scrapping, low hassle. Don't know if this is possible.

Thanks for any advice :)

Loving the scam and bank job ideas but I think the ebay one is a bit more realistic.

Might try other places first as ebay takes a big cut of the selling price. Temporary insurance on it runs out on the 16th of April so I don't want to let it hang around too long.

Hmm, if you eventually break it, does it have 'Crystal' headlights?

Don't know what they are so probably not :D

What engine is it?

1.4

Poeple may want the half leather interior.
I would say thats potentially your most valuable asset in the car.

Doesn't have half leather.

I think I'll just get it repaired and sold as a running cheap car with the essentials (MOT, reasonable mileage, solid *cough* mechanically). There's more profit there than just scrapping it. If I make an extra £100 it's worth it.

Whats wrong with the gearbox?

Don't know what's causing the problem but it's making a ticking sound when the cars in motion. Seems to be both when the clutch is up and down.

The most cost effective solution is to buy another one used rather than have it taken out, sent away to fix and then more labour to reinstall.

I've today managed to source a new one for £100 :)
