I've moved into a new flat last week and the wifi is very weak and patchy in the bedroom.

There is an ethernet port in one of the walls and one by the router in the lounge.

What is the best way to get wifi in the bedroom? Can I just plug an old router in or am I best off with one of those home plugs with wifi?

Thanks

If there's an Ethernet connection available use it.

An old wireless router configured as an access point would be fine. Some routers have an AP mode you can select from the configuration pages, others you'll need to setup manually.

A "portable router", e.g.:
http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/?categoryid=3142

Plug an ethernet cable from the main router to the ethernet socket in the lounge. Plug the portable router into the ethernet socket in the bedroom (hope that these two sockets are, indeed, connected). Configure the portable router in Access Point mode. Give it the same SSID and password as your main router.

Job done.

Thanks for the responses.

So at the moment Im running a cable to the ethernet port in the wall from my main router, then another cable from the port in the wall in the bedroom to an old router that I'm trying to configure as an AP.

Im trying to use an old netgear wgr614v9 that I found lying around, but it seems to be a pig to get working.

Guide seems relatively simple. Have followed this http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/19852/related/1

Problem is anything I try to connect to the new wifi gets stuck at obtaining IP?

Any ideas.

Cheers again!

On the second router (which will become an access point), make sure you give it a static ip, so if main router is 192.168.0.1 then make it 192.168.0.2 for example. Update DHCP in main router to start from .3 as well. On the AP turn off DHCP and change DNS and gateway ip to be the main router IP (eg .1).

Ok thanks ill have another look.

Currently main router is 192.168.1.1, I followed guide and made the AP 192.168.1.100

Im using a dsl n55u as my main router. Would that be the IP pool starting address under DHCP?

I have turned off DHCP on AP off but haven't tried changing the DNS gateway. Will try all of this now!

All you really need to do on the old router is

1. Configure WiFi Settings to match main router
2. Turn off DHCP
3. Connect a cable from the main router to one of the LAN ports on the old router

That's it, all done.

God dammit I hate networking! Nothing ever just works haha.

Seem to be able to connect to it fine now but not getting an internet connection.

As it's a common mistake, it's worth checking that there's nothing plugged into the wgr614v9's WAN port.

If you're connected to the main router can you access the wgr614v9's management IP?

What does IPCONFIG /ALL show you when you're connected to the wgr614v9?

Na its plugged into a LAN port though I did try the WAN just in case.

I can access the AP from my desktop plugged directly into my asus router yes.

Ill plug the wgr614v9 back into the desktop and let you know.

Right I think it turns out the sparky has cocked up AGAIN and wired the ports all in wrong. Connecting directly to the main router by cable gives me internet through the wgr614.

Guess im going to have to redo it.

At least you can just take the faceplates off and check the pairs are all terminated to the same pins at each end.

Yeah I have the sockets working now and the router recognises the connection. There was a load of lose connections.

Still can't get Internet through it though. Looks like everything else is set up Ok.

Should the Internet light come on as it would just using it normally? Also in the status tab it shows as not connected. I don't need to put my bb log in details in do I?

Ok thanks that helps.

So connecting one of my mining rigs to the router via cable said it was on a limited network with no connection, same with connecting the rig directly to the ethernet port.

However moving everything into the next room and setting it up missing out the cable in the wall, the rig connects fine.

Time to take the sockets back off...

Am I right in thinking with cat6 it doesnt matter where the pairs go as long as its the same both ends?

The actual colours don't matter, but the pairs need to be in correct positions. You couldn't for example just wire 1-2 3-4 5-6 7-8.

It's as easy to wire it correctly.
