Hi,

I currently have my router in the living room next to the phone socket and my computer in a spare room connected by wireless. The wireless signal is limited, fine for emails and browsing but useless for You Tube and streaming video.

What is the best way to hard wire to the spare room? I need to go up and through the roof space and back down to the spare room, probably about an eight metre run in total. Should I extend the telephone line and move the router next to the computer or leave the router where it is and run a cat5 cable to the spare room? What is the best option and what will give the best speeds, or is there no difference?

What service do you have is it ADSL or Fiber?

Best way is LAN cable and if the equipment you are connecting is not going to move just a direct patch cable point to point.

You may also be able to use a Power Line network adaptor so the wiring in the house connects the router to your PC yes saves messing with wires in ceilings or floor spaces.

The service is ADSL.

"direct patch cable point to point" Sorry not sure what this means?

As said power line adapter kits will be your best option.

they cost more, but its a lot easier than trailing a wire through the house

500Mbps Powerline adapters!

I have for years been a fan of hard-wired connections; it was years before I trusted WiFi. I have recently started using a pair of Zyxel 500Mbps Powerline Adapters (PLA4102) for my AudioVisual setup. They cost less than £40, are very compact, incredibly easy to install and on a single ring main work really well - they are DEFINITELY faster than WiFi. In your environment, they should be fine.

Axel, thats what the lead is called a Patch Cable, and Point to Point should be self explanatory EG you are going from one Point to a second Point.:D:D

As I said if you dont fancy pulling wire under floorboards and lifting a few floorboards to route the wire point to point best option is Powerline Adaptors and get the fastest you can get will be OK. ;);)
