Best way to host own photographs?

How are people hosting their own photographs online? I'd like to have comprehensive control such as passworded galleries and public sections. Ideally with an easy to use workflow/upload facility.

I've looked at packages by zenfolio and smugmug etc which are great but I'd really like to explore standalone options first.

A Wordpress/Drupal-based portfolio theme of some description? I believe you can password-protect pages and posts in both, and both handle image resizing presets (which you can customise).

wordpress. Just make sure you get some security plugins, it seems there are allot of people out there that love hacking them for kicks.

I use WordPress for the site and gallery2 for the image galleries. I can use password protected galleries and it supports online purchasing. I can't shore you a link as the rules here don't allow it. But have a look on talk photography and my site is linked from there.
