I have a fairly new build

Since 2 weeks ago, only when gaming, my PC crashes, just freezes with no error codes or messages

Re-installed Windows
Bought new Memory sticks

Now when I game, the PC instantly restarts, only when gaming.

Re-applied thermal paste, last crash happened when i was looking at CPU temps, crashed at 55c

Doubt its my card, its new and worked fine prior to this crashing

A lot of comments on Steam saying its my PSU?

Best way to start trouble shooting without buying a new CPU GPU

crashes as soon as i start a game, doesnt have time to heat up

Its ok when i browse the web watch a movie, transferred files from one drive to another

ruled out the ram and M.2, cant be CPU as ive had it for a year no issues no overclocking

Have a look in event viewer, the crash will show as event 41 kernel power, see if there is any other errors around this.

You don't provide details of your system. On my systems the main reason a pc crashes only in games is the ram speed, have you tried the ram at stock speed and not at the xmp speed?

"event 41 kernel power" Can mean anything even pulling the plug out the wall now will give me that error so does not necessarily point to a bad PSU.

so 2 weeks ago I bought a Asus ROG Thor PSU, didnt install it, my BSOD changed to game crashes after an hour then 20 mins and less

since a few days ago as soon as i start a game it would lock up the pc and self re-start

So yesterday i spent 6 hours re-building my pc, removed my 1300 watt Evga G2, put the new 1200 watt ROG Thor in

Re-started my PC, fired up Cyber Punk 2077 and played for 5 hours with zero crashes

SO that confirms its the PSU, had it for like 5-6 years

Damn I thought Evga G2 PSU's were bullet proof.

Now I really hope I can raise an RMA as these have a 10 years warranty on them

I did have a peek through the grills and it looks very dusty in the Evga PSU, maybe a dust clear up will fix it? but scared if I open it it will void the warranty?

As I said that error is too wide scoped to say for sure it is the PSU (I could get that error right now simply pulling power with PC on), that is why you test with spare ideally.

You can stick a hoover to the grill and suck the dust from it (Enermax's advise).

What surprises me even more is the Steam folks were actually right, lol. I find it's rarely the PSU but I guess in this case it most certainly was. I would certainly be interested to know what's wrong with it.

well look at the origin at purchase invoice, it is dated January 2016, so its 5 years old, it hasn't had heavy use, more of a continuous light use, so I requested an RMA based on the Evga 10 year warranty and it been approved, i need to post it out to hungary

they did offer an advance RMA where i pay them 300 via paypal as a deposit, they refund me after they receive the faulty one, i didnt go for that as I already bought a ROG THOR

As the PSU still works, just on higher load, gaming it knocks out the PC, maybe its the dust or somthing else like a failed cap

So kudos to Evga for accepting the RMA, I guess Ill have a spare 1300 watt PSU with the Evga thin red aftermarket cables, or ill wack it on the mm....

Yes, I have to say I don't think I have kept a PSU for more than about 5-6 years. They usually manage to develop some issue around then.

Don't worry about the old one though, power supplies are thin on the ground at the moment, you would have no problems selling it. Mind, I always keep one spare, just in case.

well I visited the post office to post the Evga PSU to Germany for RMA

They stated because its more than 2kg it will cost £29 for non insured non tracked postage

Or £47 for insured tacked delivery, via Parcel force

I mean Whaat! nearly 50 quid to post something to Germany, i declined and will use fedex or somthing, its gotta be brexit

damn....

No RM is rip off, they will go by weight or size (whatever suits them and they have a box to test it for size), 1ounce or 1mm over and you pay far more.
