Hi Guys,

My question here is what software do you all use to keep your systems nice and tidy for gaming but also general use.

My pc is used for general use, video editing and gaming. I currently use tuneup utilities 2011 but after a clean install i noticed improved fps but then when i reinstalled the few programs i use then let tuneup utilities do its stuff the fps in games droped a little.

Now im the type of guy that sticks to what i know until software fails on me. Could it be that tuneup utilities is not that good if so what are all you lot using.

Best registry cleaner

Best tool to defrag my hard drives (windows and tuneup always show different results).

Best software to remove junk files, clutter and temp files etc.

Thanks in advance

The only advice is double check the links your clicking on and read whats on the screen. Do a disk cleanup now and again and make sure you keep your files sorted. It's the only advice I can give really. Turn off auto updates and manually do the updates every month. Keep checking.

I just use ccleaner

I never install anything besides things I've installed on the first day, only updates

Ccleaner Daily, Virus Scan Weekly and Defrag (Google search for MyDefrag, used to be JK defrag is listed under the Free Utilities thread) Weekly to Bi Weekly. Served me well and quickly for over 4 years now.

Best registry cleaner

None of them. Registry cleaners are useless snake oil. The amount of stuff they remove is minuscule compared to the size of the registry.

Defraggler or MyDefrag.

CCleaner.

i have heard of ccleaner before is it any good and what does it do.

Removes temporary files, clears browser caches, clears recent document lists and other personal info. It even has a registry cleaner. I use it every week or so to get rid of any old temporary files that have built up.

Well said.

If running Windows 7 you can ignore third party defraggers. Windows Defrag gives a different result because it ignores chunks larger than a certain size; Defragging larger chunks makes no difference to performance and is just wasted effort.

CCleaner.
Agreed.

It goes through all your temp folders and other places for files which can be safely deleted. Depending on how you use your computer, you could save several hundred MB, or even a few GBs of data. Only needs to be run weekly at most.

registry cleaners in the past have actually saved my bacon.
They cant be useless as the have got rid of startup errors that i have had.

They are useless. Your experience was either a coincidence or blind luck.

so the windows 7 defrag is good then.

What about adjusting visual effects. Thats one thing that tuneup utilities does that does make quite a performance increase.

Windows 7 defrag does it on it's own on schedule. Don't touch it. You can only optimize it so far and then it's up to upgrading hardware to increase performence.

Out of curiosity what is your hardware? If it's got 4GB or more then you shouldn't need to do bot all. Don't mess about with it and it will be OK.

Assuming your system is an actual gaming system, then all these little tweaks wont make any difference to your gaming. Windows 7 automatically reduces visual settings if your GPU is struggling playing a game, so you don't need to do anything there either.

yes windows 7 is surpose to adjust automatically when gaming but it doesnt.

i know this because my games run a hell of a lot better when i select the windows 7 basic theme before i go on a game.

This thread seems to be running off topic now anyway so can we keep this to my original question before this starts leading to upgrade this and upgrade that blah blah.

So if you no that changing the theme improves gaming performence what question are you asking here?

PS, have you not read this thread yet?

The one thats in the original topic regarding software to keep my pc in top shape removing junk, defrag etc

PS: Why would i want to read a thread about xp that is 7 years old!!!!

You have been told.

CCleaner for junk.
Windows Defrag for HDD maintenance
Common sense when downloading/installing software
Keep Windows up to date
Use this to disable Aero when gaming
Avoid registry cleaners, Windows boosters or tuneup software [they're all junk].

If he is looking for a little extra boost in performance while playing games, Try GameBooster from Iobit, i used to use it on my laptop not found the need for it now, but it shuts down Aero, Programs hogging memory in the background and Services you won't use while playing a game, worth a look if thats what your after.
