I have no excuse as to why I dont have even the most faint idea of how to play poker, I mean -nothing- as it seems that it is getting more popular than ever, and everyone knows how to play it.

I've googled it, yes, there are plenty of websites out there but I'm looking for a more personal reccomendation from you lot on how to play the basics, and then follow on to a more advanced game.

I'm looking for something a little mroe interactive than just text explaining it, I realise that there are thousands of online poker sites though, so give me some reccomendations please :)

Cheers,
Doodles

[edit] I'm gonna need a green see through visor cap too, where do i get one of those?

best way is to play with people. simple as.

buy some beer from tescos have some mates round (maybe buy some chips/poker set if no one has one first) and have a game.

make it a weekly thing and you'll soon learn.

Download Full Tilt and use play money, also play with some mates over a beer or 10 as previously mentioned.

I'd personally learn the basics by playing online before going to any live games. If you want a 3D client then check out PKR. Otherwise I recommend Ladbrokes. You can play with pretend money so there's nothing to worry about. You'll pick it up quickly.

Get the basic rules down and have a dabble.

If you fancy more theory behind the actual game, read Doyle Brunsons - Super System and the Harrington On Hold'Em books.

Pick up a book like Chambers Card Games by Peter Arnold.

Edit: oops didnt read that you wanted something interactive.

you can play 1c/2c blinds online. don't bother with play money / facebook poker past getting to grips with the rules, you won't learn anything from it

Facebook poker is fine, so is any other site that allows you to play with playmoney.

Give it a go and sit with a site which has the hands, pair, straight etc.

Go and enjoy :)

A lot of the local casinos round here do beginners nights where you learn to play with other people. I know that The Grosvenor and Stanley in town used to do it, I assume Aspers and Gala in Sunderland do too.

I'll be watching this with interest as i've been meaning to learn for ages.

Cheers guys

Play with the Computer, then move onto online games. All free and easy to get into. :)

Probably best if you like to pick things up as you go along.

I'm using this at the moment and just kind of forcing my self to learn it. and I'm getting there. I'm having to keep checking hands and such.

sick of youtubing 'how to play poker' and either getting prank videos, or adverts. or demo's which just complrtly miss out the whole betting process.

if anyone knows any decent videos for absolute noobs, speak up :)

I'm not gonna fold yet (oh yea, see what I did there?)

The more you play the better you will get. Just bear in mind that by playin with "play money" you aren't learning too much other than the actual game. When play money is involved every one is a lot more "looser" which means they will gamble on their initial hand rankings more. Real money is where it's at. Try some micro stakes once you know the hand rankings and feel comfortable wit the format :)

I found playing silly free flash games like the ones on miniclip.com are good to learn the basic rules without getting bored, Govenor of Poker was a good one, win money and take over towns. Gets harder as you go on too so learn some basic advanced "moves" in the game aswell. Once you've learnt the basics though you wont progress anymore without playing against real/real-time players. Experience is the key once you know how to. :)

Check me out lol, I'm a millionaire already :)

I dont fully understand what I'm doing but I feel like I'm picking it up quickly. I'm gonna have to research what check, fold, raise and call actually mean though.

there were 10 people in that game but most lost. perhaps they feared me? :) lol

I got a book - The Virgin Guide To Poker (ISBN 978-0753510933).
I found it very easy to follow and everything I always wondered about big blind, pot, raise, call, etc. is explained clearly.

Play on a poker site and play with "Play Money".

I think you can use play money on PKR - and that has a pretty nice interface :)

R B: Fold is when you chuck your cards away, cheeck is when no one has made a bet before you, or you are first to act and you wish to neither fold, or bet. Raise is when you wish to bet, or increase someones previous raise. And call, is to call a raise made by someone else at your table.

Easy enough, you'll pick it up as you go along.

Just be wary of play money, it will lead you into a false sense of security, as most people don't play 'real money' as they do 'play money'.
