Best way to learn php?

For a while now I have wanted to learn how to programme in php. I have got no programming experience, only html coding for websites.

I have purchased two books on the subject:
Sams Teach Youself PJP in 24 Hours
PHP and MYSQL Web Development

Are there any courses that teach php programming skills or things you could recommend?

The way I learned was to think of a project and do it.

First thing I did was a PHP guestbook, then a sweet shop and then I was thrown in the deep end and had to create a whole backend for a large eCommerce website where I learnt something new everyday!

Theres several nice getting started tutorials, the main one that I used many years ago was the PHP manual, a little tedious and not so exciting I learnt the basics in 1 day from it.

After reading the basics your best off doing what tsinc80697 said and jumping in the deep end with your own project.

You should look into grabbing the 3DBuzz Php Video Tutourials, their quite informative, and aparently really help you get into the swing of things.

I too have been wanting to learn PHP for a while, just never ever get round to it.
