hey guys, i have around 20 word documents that i want to have extra protection on as at the moment i have my pc backing up to two other hard drives and my documents folder is also mirrored to my usb stick which can clearly be lost and hacked.

i'm on vista home prem and office 2007, what do you think my best option is? or maybe just zipping and paasswording? any ideas welcome

Word has an inbuilt password option. Make sure to choose the right settings or notepad will open the file with gibberish and readable text

Using an encrypted virtual disk is probably the best way in terms of security, with a little sacrifice in convenience. Google "truecrypt".

ok cool, the issue is i need to back them up in diffirent locations so have a word password might be good, as need to access them and also let people at work use my drives

Tools > Security > Options > Advance has about 7 options (in Word 2003). The lowest is readable using notepad.

Though googling "word password crack" is an eye opener

yeah i see there are ways around it, so what other options do i have so way of adding security to the document unless i use a 3rd party software

Do you need to be able to open the documents on older versions of Word?

Pick RC4 encryption and a decent password, i.e. no dictionary words, and you should be fine.
