Best way to organise iTunes library?

Itunes....ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH it's like trying to do rocket science

Whats the best way to organise the library? At present I have around 30GB of music and 550GB of movies I want in my iTunes library in the correct formats so that I can sync them to my iPad and iPhone easily.

I have a 250GB hdd on my MBP and a 500GB external. Since I can't find a way to split the iTunes library over multiple HDD's oes this mean i'm going to have to buy a 1TB+ external HDD just for iTunes?

Secondly whats the best format to put them into the iTunes library? I've downloaded hand break and converted a few to .m4v but when I try sync a video to my iPad it says its failed as it won't be able to play the video.

So you have 580gb of media, only a 250GB internal drive and only 500GB external drive... Of course you need a larger disk! What do you back up to after all?

Just use the iPad or Apple TV presets in handbrake for your transcoding, should work fine. Does for me.
