best way to password-protect dowloads?

was thinking of using winrar and doing it that way... but is there a way of password protecting the page or something from my host control pannel?
i'm sure there is, i just don't know how to do it! a little help please? :cool:

Stick the files in their own directory, then slap some htaccess/htpasswd authentication on it (which you can do from cPanel, I believe). That's the easiest way for users and yourself.

ok, so i just write something like "www.mysite.com downloads" then.
