as title really, what would the best way to promote a website online?

Would it be as easy as using google adwords or adsense.

edit: also I would be using register1 as the web hosting site and to purchse the domain name, would that be all I need to do to get the site up and running. apart from creating the website obviously.

Cheers

really depends what the site is about; can you tell us or is it private?

yeah you just need hosting and domain name for a website, but to get it online you should use an ftp, do you know what that is?

if you want to use google then its adwords you want, which will advertise your sit on other websites. Make sure its what you want though first before you start chucking loads of money into adwords.

if your providing a service then there is many sites out there, e.g. gumtree, craiglist, vivastreet you can offer your services. also just google directories of what your company is about and get listed there, also yell if its free, and other like that e.g. touch local etc.

try googling the title of this thread and you wil get loads of reponses

My brother has asked me to promote his company on the web, the home maintenence company, basically kitchen fits e.t.c and well everything to do with home maintenence.

FTP=File transfer protocol. I only know basics of this and I was gonna use http://www.coreftp.com/ dont know how good it is, have you any recommendations.

This also leads me to another question. With register1 hosting the site, I wouldn't need my computer on 24/7 would I? I just upload the website to there server and thats it?

Cheers for help BTW

having a quick look at the ftp im not sure of how good it is as i couldn't find an pics on the website. try using filezilla, its what i use and many on this forum, so if you get stuck help is only a few clicks away.

yeah getting the hosting with someone else means your computer doesn't need to be on ever as the viewers get the files from the server.

i haven't looked into the company your using but how much is this costing you? just a pure recomendation is to look into using vidahost for hosting and domain as they have really great pricing for what you get and the quickest most helpful support team i have evr heard of, i email them sometimes for help, within a minute i get a response.

have uyou tried googling for what the company offers?

its sites like the below this that you want to be listed on aswell as link exhancing can help. tbh the best way to promote your site is to have it high on google listings which means you need to look into seo (search engine optimisation),

i just googled kitchen fitting direcotry and there is 23 million results so a lot of places for you to advertise on

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=kitchen+fits+directory&btnG=Search&meta=

hope this helps

I had a look on file hippo for an FTP and thought go for that one but I'll follow your lead and go for filezilla.

I used fellow OCuk member ADZ's site http://www.ochostreview.co.uk/ to help choose hosting. Register1 was top in rankings, after checking vidahost came in 2nd. Saying that though not many people made reviews?

Register1 is £49pa(£99for3yr) for 2gb storage and 60gb transfer

Vidahost is £65pa for 250mb storage and 25gb transfer

Think i'll go Register1.

Cheers for all the advice, with his line of work the major advertising he gets is by word of mouth, but he would ideally like a site to upload before and after pics e.t.c and perhaps expand later, so I think I'll just get him up and running but tell show him some of the options yu've suggested for future referance.

Forehead tattoo job on eBay. You benefit from online and offline advertising that way.

Funny you should say that. When he asked me, first thing I said was "cant you just get the name tattood on your forehead"

Vidahost is £30pa for the quoted package...

To improve google search rankings make sure your site is accessible and read some tutorials about search engine optimisation. Make sure you don't abuse anything though as google will block you.

Well ye £30 annual fee and £3 monthly fee so £65.

As far as I could see Register1 does not charge a monthly fee just an annual fee of £49 (£99 for 3years)

Dont know where your getting your figures from but the package is £30 a year flat rate no other charges, I've just bought this package and £30 is all I pay

vidahost like register1 offer discounted prices if you take out a longer "contract" (probably not the correct word for this but i hope you get what i mean).

So if you buy one years worth of hosting from register1 you pay £49, but if you buy 3 years worth in one go you pay £99 which comes to £33 a year.

Vidahost offer a montly payments, semi-annually, annually, and biennially each with an increasing discount. Depends how long you plan to use them as a host. It's not a yearly fee + a monthly running fee for the shared hosting account.

Either way both companies seem to be popular on these forums with people saying they both have fast support. I think for a small site you wont go wrong with either.

Of course if you want really cheap hosting you can look to the states, but then you lose technical support and apparently a ranking on "show me pages from the UK" on google.co.uk? (is that actually true?)

Ah cheers for clearing that up for me :o . To defend myself though the website is not that clear for people just having a quick glance at prices, it is easy to assume you have to pay annually + monthly. :D
