I want to start recording my gameplays, since I enjoy watching it later and pretty funny things happen when playing with friends. I was wondering what would be the best way to record the gameplay since I only have a a couple of standard Seagate HDs with low write bandwidth.

I want a good quality (at least 720p) but I also don't want to loose a all my frames. What do you guys use as recording set up?

Try fraps if you're recording at 720p. If you're having issues with lag with traps try recording to a different HD to what its recording from.

The best way is to use some sort of capture device to offload a lot of the work needed and have on the fly encoding should you wish it without taking up as much cpu time.

Remember, you did say best, not cheapest :p
Can't find the item at the moment, forgot the name.

afterburner is the best, ive tried using them all!

+1

I have tried allot of different programs and afterburner captures in 720 and I only seem to lose about 7fps in BF3. If I get something I want to keep, I then compress the files to .mkv file format with a free program called Handbrake.

For local capture - Dxtory.

Nothing compares to it for power and flexability. It makes Fraps look like a toy.

Use Lagarith as a codec with Dxtory and you have near pixel perfect capture with very little overhead compared to some other solutions.

Small sample clip of Battlefield 3 in 1080p to give you an idea of quality, was rendered at ~7Mbit/Sec prior to Youtube receiving it.

I used to use the demo record feature in games then play it back and record that in Fraps.

Loads better than actually recording as you're playing, although not all games have the demo record feature but most fps games/games that have a console do.

Games from the 90s early 2000s. :D

Not seen demo record feature in many moderns game. In-fact, I cannot remember the last time I even used it outside of the half Life engine. I miss the feature but to be honest it was flakey at best and rarely 100% accurate to what actually happened.

Battlefield 3 was supposed to have it through Battlerecorder but the chances of us seeing that are slim to none.

I think DCS:A10 has demo recording as part of the game but cannot think of another modern title personally.

+1 dxtory has the most options for what resolution you want t he capture and the least performance hit.

HELL NO!

i tried it when the paid for version was offered for free a while back and it had worse quality and needed more resources at all settings compared to MSI afterburner. no matter what compression settings or recording speed i used on playclaw my FPS would go down to 30-35, whereas MSI afterburner kept the FPS up in the 50s and 60s.

its one of the few free programs that i instantly wiped from my PC because it was so bad

are you thinking of a HD PVR? the two best known PCI-e HD PVR's are the hauppauge colossus and the black magic intensity pro

i'm not sure what the hauppauge offering is called in the USB/thunderbolt category but black magic can offer you the intensity shuttle or the intensity extreme, depending on what connections you need

personally i'd get the black magic versions of either type because they can cope with 1080p rather than the 1080i of the hauppauge range, although this might have changed recently
