best way to scrap a car these days? [pics on p2]

my younger brothers 52 reg punto has blown the head gasket and is uneconomical to repair.
he wants me to get rid. what's the best way, advertise it as a break on ebay or drive it to the local scrapyard and hope they give me a bit of money for it?

true. until i have to break it. i was thinking of stripping the lights, sticking them on ebay and driving to the scrapyard but do they even give you any cash for a car these days?

Find a local metal merchants, weigh the car in, cut the cat off and sell them that seperate...
:)

aaah good idea! i could strip the lights and stick them on ebay, there's an etb not far from me, i could get them to take the cat off and drive it to the metal merchants that is just down the road from where the etb workshop is and weigh the little beauty in and do the cat seperately :)

But with a 52 punto with hgf I'd just list it as spares repairs on ebay, will go for more than scrap value.

do you reckon it will be more viable to break seeing as i will have to do multiple listings, it will take up the space on my drive, have to post or wait for collection of parts and then get rid of a shell? the engine could be repaired by a mechanic or someone who knows what they're doing as the bodywork on the car is vgc, shame to scrap it really but that's what he wants to do, he was quoted £800 to repair the head gasket.
if i could get £150 weigh in and maybe £20-£30 for the lights in total, i'd be happy. it has a fiat cd changer i could salvage too. probably make a bit more if i broke it but it's the time requirements that come with it, i wouldn't fancy taking a bumper off myself for example.
there's 3/4 of a tank worth of fuel in it too!

Round our way (west midlands) you'd get about £150 for that in scrap value.

that's where i live, well, worcestershire :) i have a merchant in mind but am always open to recommendations ... though i haven't completely written off the idea of a break yet

No I mean sell the car as a whole on ebay for someone else to fix up. Sod breaking cars, only worth it if you have a car with valuable std parts. (Type-R etc)

you may be onto something. an ebay search shows these are more in demand than i thought. i'm sure someone who could fix the head gasket themselves would be willing to pay £200 for it

I just got a car picked up from my work car park.

Got £150 for an older almera with no exterior lighting, no interior, siezed rear drums(with puncture) and the gearbox that doesn't work right.

Going straight into the crusher so stripped as much as I can to sell on the owners club.

The guy asked what I had been offered and I, stupidly, said nothing...I just wanted it away. So could have got more for it I guess?

£150 is £150 dude

My mum has a 2000 Reg punto 1.2 that popped the head gasket, my dad drove over there and fixed it whilst it was parked on the road outside her house on the same day, so it can't be that big of a job on one of these?

it's not for someone who knows what they are doing and has the time.

i went and saw the car last night, it's not in vgc at all tbh. there is a light on the dashboard of a steering wheel (power steering problem? that is on - don't think it was in city mode so not that) the drivers door check strap is on its way out), the exhaust knocks - want's adjusting, there's a nasty scratch/dent on the nsf wing and door, there's a small bit of black trim missing from the rear bumper, there are the usual small scratches on the paint, the drivers seat is worn and interior needs a valet.

i am going to bring it over to my house later and will photograph it so scubascorpion and others can see what it's like. i am being honest when i say i have no idea how what the problem is to be causing the steering wheel light to ignite? and don't want to sell something to anyone on here that may be more trouble than it's worth. will have the photo's up before 16:00 all being well.

it's far from a complete dog :D

car is now at mine. asked my brother about steering wheel light on dashboard, he says it only happens now and then (hmm?) usually if car has been stood.

have shown damage referred to, to wing, door not major but not nice either but on the plus side, there's lots of tread on the tyres and the car has never been crashed. i will take some of the interior once i've given it a quick hoover and then list it's pro's and cons, scubascorpion so you can decided whether it is for you or not.

the good points

fsh - main dealer serviced until 2005
2 owners total
spare red key (somewhere)
MOT - til january
Mileage - 91000
half a tank of fuel
good tyres
sensible colour
blaupunkt cd changer in boot
spare tyre intact and vgc

the bad points
head gasket failure
intermittent steering light on dash
bodywork isn't A1 but not awful, the usual light scratches, along with the deep scratch to wing and door
interior needs a valet and drivers seat is worn
exhaust needs refitting
car will need to be transported away

scubascorpion, please try and let me know if you would like this or not by this time tomorrow (or as early as possible tbf) as i will list it on the auction site with a reserve of £150 if not tomorrow evening. i would prefer to see it go to someone who will repair it but cash is king and it has to go to the crusher, so be it. there is road tax til january which i would be willing to keep on the car for a price, probably £5-£10 if this is required elst i will get the remainer refunded. :)

Meh, that'll buff out :D

Trust me your details / address if you want to sell it for £150 and I'll get it picked up.

please read my post above listing the good and bad and let me know if you're still interested. if we can come to some quick arrangement, i'll keep the tax on the windscreen for you and you can have it for £150.

ok. £150 and it's yours, will forward you my details :)

Looking at the photo of the driver's seat I do wonder how badly the car has been cared for!

I have seen 20 year old tractors that are better inside.

my brother is a big lad, 6'3 and nearly 18 stone, he is a logistics manager and in and out of the warehouse, speaking to drivers etc, he gets grubby put that with him using it for things such as fishing, lugging his guitar equipment around and a general lack of respect for the car haven't helped plus it was never going to be of the highest quality due to the make and model.

i look forward to the progress update, andy. props to you for having a bash :)

I got £245 for a 'spares or repairs' Renault on eBay. Like others have said, you don't even need to leave your chair. Just make it clear it's for spares or repairs and put it on with a £99 start price or something.

this was my second choice, would've had a reserve of £150 and gone to the crusher had it not made that but andy was keen and seemed like he genuinely wanted to try and give the car a second chance. i offered him first refusal and he didn't mess me about so i was more than happy with the outcome.

will be interesting to see how it goes.
