Best way to set colours correctly?

Hi all,

Is that a application available that I can use to help set the colours/contrast etc. to be what they should? I don't have an expansive monitor or anything but I get the feeling the settings are not 'set' correctly.

Any tips?

Am I'm right in saying there are no apps for adjusting colours and you most people do it by eye?

You have to do it by eye or buy a colour calibration kit like a spyder 3. An application has no idea how your monitor displays colour! The best you can get by hand is probably something like: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

Adobe CS (and possibly Elements, and others) comes with a calibration tool. Useful if you have it, but otherwise rather expensive!

That's no replacement for a hardware calibration device, though.
